Children with Special Needs a Challenge for Low Income Families

Proj.1: Mexico - CELINA & HER SON BRYAN Update

Celina is Bryan’s mother, a 13-year-old with cerebral palsy - a disease that impairs his walking ability. Bryan comes from a family of four with a mother, father, and two brothers. His father works long hours to provide basic needs and his mother has a part-time job to help with the housing expenses. The extra money goes toward special services Bryan attends during the week.

Bryan’s case originally caught our attention when we saw his mother carrying him on her shoulders on the way to the especial education school. To learn more about their situation, Zapatos Rotos asked Celina to describe a typical day.

Celina works Monday, Tuesday, and Friday to cover Bryan’s transportation, medicine, and therapy expenses. With tears in her eyes, she detailed her journey from her house to bus stops as she carries Bryan on her shoulders to get him to his school and necessary therapies. When we asked why she doesn’t use a wheelchair to transport Bryan, she responded that she cannot afford one, and that most of the public transportation is not handicapped accessible. Nevertheless, she hopes to obtain a folding wheelchair to assist in the day-to-day travel routines.

The cost of Bryan’s medication is $ 700 (MXN) every 20 days or $ 53 USD. His daily transport $ 130 MXN, $ 10 USD.
