Children with Special Needs a Challenge for Low Income Families

Proj.1: Mexico - ROMANA & HER GRANDDAUGHTER MAYTE

Mayte is Romana, 7, granddaughter who was diagnosed with psychomotor delays (a condition that affects the nervous system) making it difficult for her to communicate with others. Romana and Mayte travel one hour and a half daily, so Mayte can receive the special needs services she needs. Mayte 's mother is the sole provider in a household of 3, as Mayte´s father left them some time ago. Her mother works, but her salary is too low to cover Mayte`s needs and those of the rest of the family.

Romana tells us that sometimes she has to make a decision as to whether eat or taking Mayte to school, because she does not have enough money to pay for transportation. While Mayte is in school 7:30 am to 1:00 pm her grandmother waits for her outside the school, no matter the type of weather. While waiting Romana wastes no time and knits scarves, which she sells to help her get some extra income for her family. Romana tells us that she does not want money, but rather sell what she makes to cover help her with transportation and food cost for her and Mayte. Romana tells us that while she is in need of help, there are other care givers, whom she teaches how to knit, in worst situations than she is, and urges us to help them before we would help her.
